Revd Elaine Meets Harry Redknapp.
A charity auction for a round of golf with sporting legend Harry Redknapp is currently live and runs until 8:00 PM on Sunday, 19th October, hosted by Phoenix Events.
How did this all come about?
“It’s incredible,” said Revd Elaine Munday.
Elaine was on a date night with her husband, Joseph, at a Phoenix Event held at St. Petroc’s Church last Thursday. Joseph, an avid football fan, was delighted to attend.
“We were really well looked after by Nicki Isaacs from Phoenix Events and venue manager Roland Oakley. The church was packed and the whole evening turned out to be a fantastic event,” said Elaine.
After queuing for a photo opportunity with Harry Redknapp, Elaine finally got her moment.
“Hello,” she said, “I’m Elaine — team vicar and Pioneer Minister.”
“Ah, you’re the ‘Pie and Liquor’ I’ve been hearing about!” Harry grinned.
The Cockney rhyming slang — meaning “vicar” — was a playful reference made possible by a conversation earlier in the evening, when Nicki and Roland had mentioned Elaine would be attending and shared some of the far-reaching community work she leads.
As the evening unfolded, Elaine was startled when she suddenly heard Harry say, “Where’s Elaine?”
“He can’t possibly mean me,” she thought. “I only came here on a date with my husband!”
But sure enough, from the front row, she realised he was looking her way — asking for "the Elaine who does all the community work." Hesitantly, she raised her hand. To her complete surprise, Harry then announced his offer: a round of golf with him, to be auctioned off to the highest bidder in support of Elaine’s work. The crowd erupted into applause.
“I was blown away. Funding is absolutely crucial for what we’re doing,” said Elaine. “We need income to sustain our work in the town.”
Overwhelmed with emotion and utterly shocked, Elaine was moved beyond words by Harry’s unexpected and unprompted kindness and generosity.
At the end of the evening, Harry added: “Oh, we’ve got to do this thing for the vicar.”
Some in the audience were even ready to start bidding on the spot. But Elaine wanted the process to be transparent and clear — not for her personally, but for the vital work she and her team carry out in the community.
Nicki suggested setting up a Charity Auction on Facebook, and the bidding has now begun.
Generous supporters have until 8:00 PM on Sunday, 19th October to place their bid here:🔗 Phoenix Events Cornwall – Facebook
