Jamie and Joy volunteering at Community Space

👥 Jamie has a clear vision for his future—and he’s already taking impressive steps to make it a reality.

A few years ago, during a work experience placement with AP Bassett Solicitors in Bodmin, Jamie had the opportunity to shadow Joy Bassett herself. The experience left a lasting impression and ended in an unexpected way. On the last day of the placement, Jamie accompanied Joy to the Friday Community Space event at St Petroc’s Parish Centre in Bodmin. There, he rolled up his sleeves and got involved—serving breakfast baps and hot drinks to delighted attendees.

Reflecting on Jamie’s contribution, Joy said:

“Jamie is a wonderful person, and his story is an example of how community can support young people.”

That first visit sparked something meaningful. Jamie continued volunteering at Community Space during every school holiday, becoming a familiar and valued presence. His dedication also contributed to the volunteering section of his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Starting at Gold level, Jamie committed himself fully—completing all sections, including the expedition—and successfully finishing the award. Once his paperwork is finalised, he’ll be invited to attend a royal venue to receive his Gold Award—an incredible achievement.

Now in Year 13 at Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth, Jamie is looking ahead to the next chapter. He plans to study law at either the University of Exeter or the University of York, continuing his journey towards a professional career.

Despite his ambitions, Jamie remains grounded in his community. During school and university breaks, when he’s home in Bodmin with his parents—owners of Flory’s Restaurant and Café in Mount Folly Square—he is likely to continue supporting Community Space, maintaining the connections he has built over the years.
