👥 Debby tells her story of walking, singing and supporting
I moved to Bodmin in the autumn of 2020 and wondered how I was going to meet new people. At my previous home, I’d been part of a walking group, so I decided to look for something similar. One day, I spotted a poster in town advertising walks during Lent. I went along and met Barbara, the walk’s organiser—and I’m so glad I did.
Joining those Lenten walks opened so many doors. It wasn’t just about walking; it was the beginning of feeling part of a community. Since then, I’ve become a regular walker with Bodmin Way, exploring the beautiful scenery and the five historic churches along the route.
Walking has always been something I love, and as a dog lover, I also spend time each week walking a friend’s dog—usually three or four times.
Music has always been important to me too, so joining the Bodmin Way Community Choir felt like a natural step. I now help as ‘Choir Support’, which has been a really rewarding role.
Through the choir’s links with Bodmin Methodist Church, I also discovered a new opportunity—getting involved in a Community Panto. In February 2026, I had great fun playing the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk.
Another unexpected and rewarding part of my journey has been volunteering with the young people’s group at St Petroc’s Church. With them, I’ve taken part in craft events at Bodmin Keep – Cornwall’s Army Museum, led trails around Priory Park and Bodmin town, and walked a section of the Bodmin Way from St. Stephen’s Church, Nanstallon to St. Petroc’s Church in time for a well-earned cream tea.
I’ve also shared an interest in being involved in a special ‘Strawberry Moon’ walk—a Bodmin Way walk with a difference. It hasn’t happened yet, but who knows? It could be another adventure waiting just around the corner.
Looking back, I’m so grateful I took that first step and joined a Lenten walk. It’s led to friendships, new experiences, and a real sense of belonging.
Thank you, Debby, for everything you’ve brought to Bodmin Way since that very first walk.
