Backing Vocals in Bodmin

On Wednesday 8 April 2026, choirs from across Cornwall gathered in Bodmin for a truly unique musical experience.

Outside St Petroc’s Church, singers met with choir leader Matt Harrison, alongside Loveny Male Voice Choir and the enthusiastic voices of Bodmin Way Community Choir - both of which regularly perform concerts in the church.

Other participating choirs were Quayside Singers from Par, Rodeohead Country Choir and Band Lostwithiel, Diaspora Carols, and Sing Truro and Falmouth, NoteAbility St Austell, Carclaze Voices and St Mawgan Military Wives Choir.

The evening promised something special—and it delivered.

Bathed in brilliant early evening sunshine, the scene outside was warm and inviting. But stepping inside the church revealed a striking contrast: a smoky, atmospheric interior transformed into a magnificent recording studio.

Emma Mansfield welcomed everyone in, where lights, microphones, a grand piano at centre stage, and a full team of musicians, technicians, and directors created a professional and exciting setting.

After a warm-up and rehearsal, the choirs were ready for their role: recording backing vocals for a new song by Flo Crowe & the Dilemmas. The band, described on their Facebook page as an

alt pop five-piece blending folk-tinged layered harmonies with electro pop beats and gritty guitar motifs,”

provided the perfect creative backdrop for the evening.

The session itself was dynamic and engaging. Visual elements, including drone footage and camera work, meant multiple takes were needed to get everything just right. At one point, a passing bus even interrupted proceedings—prompting a well-timed call of “Cut!” and a moment of shared laughter.

After two hours of recording, the final take was successfully completed. The choirs, having given their all, were free to cheer, celebrate, and head home after an exhilarating and memorable evening.

It was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate, perform, and be part of something special—an experience that will no doubt be remembered for a long time.
